Between 2012 and 2017, Willamalane Park and Recreation District (WPRD) constructed two phases of a 7-mile looped multi-use path system in Springfield along the Springfield Millrace and the Middle Fork of the Willamette River. Cameron McCarthy was the prime consultant for the planning and design of the most recent phase, the Millrace Path, a 2.7-mile paved path extending from downtown Springfield to the Middle Fork Path. CM led the programming, design, document preparation, bidding, and construction administration. CM managed and collaborated with other disciplines, including civil, electrical, structural, and environmental engineering. The path follows the north side of the Springfield Millrace east and weaves through the historic mill and lumber district. The project included a trailhead restroom, parking, waysides, furnishings, and native landscapes. The selected path alignment included three crossings over the Millrace, Jasper Slough, and significant wetlands. The project was designed and constructed using pre-engineered bridge sections placed over the water crossings without impacting jurisdictional waters/wetlands.
