Cameron McCarthy provided full site design services for the remodel of LCC’s Center Building.  This included the re-imagining of the adjacent under-used plaza space.  This included the re-imagining of the adjacent under-used plaza space. The large plaza is the heart of campus and is oriented to maximize views of the nearby foothills. It provides both large and small gathering opportunities that can be informal or formal spaces, while encouraging pedestrian movement to numerous academic buildings that surround the plaza. Symbolic topographic lines are overlaid on the plaza, representing the landscape’s original sloped terrain. These continuous lines are carried throughout the site using contemporary rectangular pavers in the hardscaped areas and swaths of grasses in the plant beds. The organizational strategy of the pavers is meant to represent how students gain increasingly complex abilities as they travel through college.
