Located in the North Portland Overlook neighborhood, the Adidas Intersection is a vital space and connection point for the rapidly growing Adidas North America headquarters. The design of the building and plaza centered around the enclosure of an underused and cold courtyard between two existing buildings. Cameron McCarthy provided exterior design services and worked collaboratively with the Architect, Contractor, and Owner to create a space that openly embraced the neighborhood and encouraged users to pause and interact.
The project was guided by a strong commitment to sustainability, which was evident in various aspects of the building and plaza’s design. Features like deep overhanging eaves, shading fins, and stepped massing were incorporated to minimize solar isolation, glare, and the need for mechanical cooling. Regional materials such as Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) were deliberately selected, enhancing the project’s sustainability goals. The plaza is accentuated by dramatic lighting and planting. A circulation path connects the plaza to the pedestrian bridge over Greeley Avenue, through the remainder of the Adidas Village, and back into the neighborhood. The Design/Build project was completed with an aggressive schedule to meet the Owner’s needs.
